Ruidoso Downs Dedicates New Prayer Garden

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 30, 2019—Tourists traveling west on Highway 70 coming into Ruidoso will have a new view looking to the right on the grounds of Ruidoso Downs Race Track. They will see a large cross that is part of the new God’s Prayer Garden.

A public dedication service of God’s Prayer Garden will be held Thursday, July 4th at 5:30 p.m., immediately following the horse races. People will be offered a shuttle ride up to the site that has illustrations depicting the life of Jesus Christ and a statue, along with the large cross overlooking the community.

The dedication service will be led by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller of the San Antonio, Texas diocese.

"This is something that we hope will be special to the community. It is our vision that when people come here that they will stop and worship at this prayer garden," Stan Sigman, co-owner of Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino, said.

"When you visit this prayer garden, it’s high enough on the property that you can overlook the valleys on all sides and it is a very spiritual setting. You can feel God’s presence here and I believe that people will have the a sense of peace when they take the time to stop and see it."

The prayer garden is the latest addition to the race track’s chaplaincy program that touches the lives of many people in Lincoln County and the race track. After more than 20 years of having weekly services on the backside, a new chapel was constructed last year to host the growing church congregation.

"The church chapel is doing a tremendous job with outreach, especially with those who live and work around the racing industry," Sigman said. "We want this prayer garden to be received by this entire community as a place to see the story of Christ depicted and to show our visitors that we are Christ-minded."
