LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 2, 2019—Since his breakthrough campaign in 2016, jockey Jesus Rios Ayala has been the epitome of consistency at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The jockey has been the leading Quarter Horse rider here in the past two years and finished only one win behind Cesar De Alba for the top spot in 2016. Aboard the breed, Rios Ayala won 105 races with a 20.2% win ratio last year, 115 races at 22.1% in 2017, and 100 races at 22.6% in 2016.

Rios Ayala has continued his winning ways in 2019, as he’s piloted 19 Quarter Horse winners at 29% win clip so far. The month of February was a typical one for the pilot, as he piloted seven winners down the local straightaway at a winning rate of 30.4%. Those figures made him, not surprisingly, the hottest rider at Los Alamitos in February.

Others to shine over the last four weeks are Erasmo Gasca, who has teamed up with trainer Matt Fales and owner Martha Wells, to make a top team. Gasca won five Quarter Horse races from his 25 mounts last month. Cruz Mendez, a four-time leading Quarter Horse rider at Los Alamitos, had 17 mounts in February, but he made the most of them by picking up five wins for a 29.4% win rate. Vinnie Bednar continues to excel on Quarter Horses, as he won five races from his 27 mounts for a solid 18.5 rate. Eduardo and Jose Nicasio each won three Quarter Horse races last month.

Leading the Quarter Horse trainer standings in February were Jesus Nunez and Scott Willoughby with five wins each while posting very similar win ratios of 22.7% and 23.8%, respectively. Fales saddled four winners from only 12 starters (33.3%) while James Glenn. Jr. visited the winner’s circle twice from seven starters. Another trainer with a solid month of February was Jorge Farias, as 66.7% of his starters finished in the top three.

Ed Allred won his 1,500th career Quarter Horse win and eight in total to lead the way in the month of February. Wells enjoyed three wins while The Quarter Company LLC won two races from two starts.

It was an interesting four weeks in the Thoroughbred jockey standings at Los Alamitos in February, as four jockeys tied for the most wins during the month. Edgar Payeras, Francisco Orduna Rojas, Christian Aragon and Ramon Guce all had five victories last month in about the same number of mounts. Payeras had 26 mounts and Guce, this track’s all-time leading Thoroughbred pilot, had 22. Orduna Rojas and Aragon each had 21 mounts. Vinnie Bednar had his share of success on Thoroughbreds, picking up four wins, four seconds and two thirds from just 13 mounts. Efrain Hernandez also had four wins and four seconds from his 18 mounts last month.

In the Thoroughbred trainer standings, Jesus Nunez, the breed’s leading trainer here in 2018, Angela Aquino, the leading trainer here in 2017, and Kelly Castaneda, who is tied with Aquino for the top spot right now, each won five races in February. Aquino got her five from 18 starters, while Castaneda saddled 21 and Nunez 22. In the owner standings, Silvia Soto, Jesus Uranga and Howard and Janet Siegel Racing LLC. finished in the top three for the month. Soto had three winners while Uranga and the Siegels had two wins each. Uranga, by the way, acquired his trainer’s license recently and will now the competing for wins with the top local Thoroughbred trainers.
