Champion Trainer Pat Thompson Memorial Services
STERLING, CO—APRIL 30, 2019— A memorial service was held Tuesday for L.R. "Pat" Thompson, 91 of Merino, Colorado, who trained numerous AQHA Racing champions. He passed away Wednesday, April 24. Pastor Jerry Bellis officiated the served at the Berean Church in Sterling.
Pat was born April 21, 1928 in North Platte, Nebraska . He married Lorraine Harn on October 19, 1956.
Pat was an accomplished horseman, this included breeding, raising and training. His horses excelled in many areas including racing, roping and showing. He had many world champion running Quarter Horses such as She Kitty, the 1961 and 1962 Champion 2-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old Filly.
He also trained the 1962 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, Little Chloe who won the Ruidoso Futurity over the great Jet Deck. She defeated former leading sire Top Moon in her Ruidoso Futurity trial. Little Chloe qualified to the 1962 All American Futurity, finishing sixth behind winner Hustling Man.

Pat also trained Miss Luton , Champion 2, 3 and Aged Mare and Mighty Deck, a notable runner and sire.
He also trained AQHA Champions Red Wig, Mr Pap and a few others and Supreme Champions that included Jet Threat , who also ran fifth in world champion Easy Jet's 1969 All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.
Another solid runner he was associated with was Alfaretta who out ran three-time world champion Go Man Go. The daughter of Robin Reed was second in the 440 yard Shue Fly Stakes to Bobs Folly in the fall of 1956. Three days later she won the 7th running of the 440 yard Buttons and Bows Stakes at Albuquerque.
Later in Pat's career he enjoyed continuing his breeding and training. He held many roping events in Northeastern Colorado. Pat was very passionate about rodeos and teaching the younger guns about his knowledge and the 'good ol' days."
He is preceded in death by a son Jim Thompson and brother Lohren "Tud" Thompson.
Pat is survived by his wife Lorraine, son Tim Thompson and wife Susan; grandchildren, Taylor Thompson and wife Cassie and Sadie Thompson and sister Marcine Tridle.
