The 38th Annual Heritage Place Yearling Sale kicked off with a pre-sale party from 5:00-7:00 p.m. the evening before the big event. Buyers and consignors reconnected while viewing the yearlings and enjoying appetizers offered at the many booths.
The use of the pedigree as a selection tool begins with a definition of what a breed is. The general definition of a breed is, “a group of animals with a common ancestor or ancestors and distinct characteristics that are passed on generation after generation.”
The All American Futurity lives up to its name, not only as a great race, but also by attracting horses from across the country. Yet, a look at how one area—California—has affected that race demonstrates how widely the West Coast has influenced the entire spectrum of Quarter Horse racing.

Cars overflowed to the highway at Ruidoso Downs Race Track Sunday afternoon! Shuttles were running nonstop to take race enthusiasts to and from the track for a big day of racing. After the races were over the final day of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale started at 6:00 p.m.
The rain finally let up in Ruidoso and the sun came out with a light breeze to follow it on Saturday afternoon. There was a full day of racing at Ruidoso Downs followed by the second night of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
The All American weekend festivities continued on Friday, September 2. More people started arriving to the mountain to attend the first day of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Before the sale started there was racing down on the track. The Bill Reed Memorial Stakes was the only quarter horse stakes race on the program for the day.
Thursday kicked off the countdown to the 2016 All American Futurity Weekend. Mid morning Thursday, people gathered in the Turf club for the All American Futurity & Derby Draw & Brunch. Later in the evening guests attended the All American Futurity & Derby Dinner Banquet at the racetrack while the Lazy E Ranch Preview was happening up the road in the Sale Pavilion.
Ruidoso Downs hosted the trials for the All American Futurity-Grade 1 and All American Derby-G1 on August 19-21. Thirty trials were on tap for the futurity and thirteen trials to the Derby with the top ten times in each race advancing on to the finals on September 4.
Speedhorse Races ran at Fair Meadows in Tulsa on July 30th. The Grade 3 Speedhorse Quarter Horse Futurity was won by Accountably (American Runaway-Check The Account) while the Speedhorse Quarter Horse Derby was won by Card Games (Apollitical Jess-Stellar Shay). The Grade 1 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity was won by Truck Yeah (SF Royal Quick Flash-Crazy Mother Trucker). It was a spectacular weekend of racing!
Usually, once a Triple Crown begins, only one horse has the opportunity to sweep all of the races. But following the Grade 1 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park on June 4, two horses will have that chance because Ivoriona and PHQ Goodbye Earl dead-heated for first.

The AQHA on March 29 announced the 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees. The five individuals are: Marvin Barnes, Peter J. Cofrancesco III, Bobby D. Cox, Dick Monahan and Sandra Vaughn. The five horses are: Casey's Ladylove, Dashing Phoebe, Majestic Scotch, Strawfly Special and Zips Chocolate Chip.
A March 30 tornado injured several horses and damaged several stables, including the receiving barn, at the Cherokee Casino-Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Oklahoma.
A key Florida Senate committee removed two massive gambling deals from its docket on Tuesday. These bills included “decoupling” of horse tracks from the casinos.
To Hialeah Horsemen: First of all let us say that all money for non tested horses has been released since day one. Florida statute 550.2415 is copied (1)(a) and (4) is highlighted for your review. You will notice that in (1)(a) and (4) the statute basically says the identity of the animal, trainer and owner and the test results of any “positive tests” are confidential for 10 days after the results have been reported to the director of the division OR administrative action has been commenced.
I desperately hope by now all of you have heard and are beginning to understand how devastating to Oklahoma's horse industry it will be if we end up with an Equine Herpes Virus outbreak like is underway in New Mexico. At Remington Park the track management is taking every precaution reasonably possible to insure there is no residual contamination before the horses arrive.
