Sweetwater Downs launched their 2025 race meet on Saturday, August 16, opening its 15th season of horse racing with record-breaking purses, a newly overhauled paddock, and a thrilling day of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred competition. Horsemen, fans, and industry insiders alike gathered for a festive opening that set a high bar for the coming seven-week meet.
With Sean Beirne at the helm as General Manager and President of Racing Eugene Joyce steering purse growth, Sweetwater Downs kicked off its 15th season ready to elevate Wyoming horse racing.
This year, Sweetwater Downs is offering the highest purses in its history: a staggering $1.9 million, a 40% increase over 2024. The jump reflects the success of Wyoming Horse Racing’s Historical Horse Racing (HHR) terminals, which fueled growth in the sport statewide.
“Last year our purses were $1.3 million. The purses are determined by the historical horse racing handle for the year before. So last June 21, we opened a new facility on the Colorado border with over 350 machines. This year, thanks to that, after just six months our purses jumped to $1.9 million for 2025. Looking at where we are now, we believe our purses will be over $3 million next year!” said Eugene Joyce, President of Racing at Sweetwater Downs.
“We are looking at the entries for next Saturday’s trials for the open futurity. Energy Downs had a race for $230,000 and Wyoming Downs had one for $241,000, and we just might beat that. Things are definitely looking up!” He added enthusiastically.
With this boost, track officials are expecting more than 1,000 horses to ship into Rock Springs over the course of the meet. The increased stakes have already generated excitement among trainers and owners.
Opening Day also celebrated the debut of Sweetwater Downs’ newly renovated paddock and winner’s circle, giving fans a closer look at the horses and their connections before heading to the track. The action started with whoops and hollers after City Councilmen and Eugene Joyce’s golden scissors introduced the new paddock to the community.
“We were very pleased with our Opening Day. As is always the case, there is going to be some tweaking that has to be done. We debuted a new paddock and a new winner’s circle and it was a matter of adjusting to all the new changes we made during the off-season. The track was in perfect shape and the rain the evening before really tightened it up. We had a great crowd, and the energy was really fantastic. Both horsemen and fans alike gave us great feedback on the changes we made.” said Sean Beirne, General Manager of Sweetwater Downs.
Beirne, a veteran with more than 30 years in horse racing operations, management, and broadcasting, brings extensive experience from tracks such as Evangeline Downs, Arapahoe Park, and River Downs. His leadership emphasizes safety, compliance, and a top-tier race-day experience for both horsemen and fans.
Adding to the excitement was the presence of 21-year-old track announcer Liam Molinaro, calling his first full card at Sweetwater Downs.
“Opening day at Sweetwater was my first card as a full-time race caller, so it was pretty special to me. All the other races I have called have been fill in jobs, which are always a little tough because you don’t really know the sight lines and the layout of the booth. This track reminds me of one of my favorite tracks,” Molinaro said. His fresh voice brought energy to each race, further enhancing the fan experience and drawing attention to the action on the track.
With 18 days of live racing scheduled through September 28, Sweetwater Downs is set to deliver top-tier Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred action throughout their meet.
