Relentless Diamond took advantage of a bad break from the gate Thursday night by heavily favored Deep Blue to win the stakes-caliber featured allowance race.
How the tables can turn for horses at the gate. Relentless Diamond was forced in early in her last race and ran ninth, beaten almost eight lengths. Deep Blue, last year’s Grade 2 $297,000 Heritage Place Oaks winner, was the victim of gate problems and didn’t run in the top four of this allowance event for 3-year-olds-and-older who had not won a race since Nov. 15. Before the field broke from the gate Thursday in the finale of a 10-race card, Deep Blue, at 6-5 odds, false broke into the gate and then was not ready when it finally did open. As the horses broke alertly, Deep Blue hesitated and then bounced off a horse, breaking near the back. She never had a chance in behind horses. In all fairness, since leaving Remington Park after winning the Heritage Place Oaks last year, the mare had broken ninth, ninth and eighth from the gate in her last three starts before Thursday. When she won the Oaks, she broke fourth and when she ran second in the 2023 Heritage Place Futurity, she broke third.
It was Relentless Diamond’s time to shine Thursday. This 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare by Hes Relentless, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare PYC Diamond, broke perfectly on top and raced up front, barely holding on against a fast-closing Smyly (4-1) in second, who finished a half-length behind. The best Deep Blue could do on this night was finish sixth, 1-1/4 lengths behind.
Jockey Bryan Candanosa gave the winner an excellent ride for trainer Guillermo Valdivia and owner Double G Ranch (Gabriel Gutierrez) of Tulsa, Okla. He was eyeball to eyeball with Smyly the entire 330 yards of the race as the broke from the 1-and-2 holes together. Relentless Diamond was sent off at 6-1 odds and paid $14.20 to win, $6.80 to place and $6.20 to show. Smyly was another head in front of third-place finisher Socially Fun (39-1). That trifecta without the heavy favorite involved, was worth $322.75 to the 50-cent bettor.
Relentless Diamond stopped the timer in :16.556 seconds, earning a speed-index of 97. She earned $19,575 for her trip to the winner’s circle and improved her lifetime record to 25 starts, seven wins, and five thirds for a bankroll of $205,448. The mare was a $18,000 purchase from the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City in the fall of 2021. She was bred by Monty McNair.
