Extremely strong southerly winds have led to the cancellation of racing at Remington Park this evening, Friday, March 14.
Sustained winds of 40-50 mph, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph, have created unsafe conditions for horses, horsemen, and operations staff, making it impossible to conduct a safe racing program. Additionally, the combination of high winds and drastically low humidity has increased the risk of fire danger. Earlier this afternoon, Remington Park staff extinguished a small grass fire on the property.
“Remington Park and Oklahoma horsemen take pride in running our racing programs despite the challenges of unpredictable weather,” said Matt Vance, executive vice president of racing. “However, today’s extreme conditions make it impossible to race. While many of our participants are stabled here, it is unsafe for those traveling across the state, hauling horse trailers on the highways.”
The severe winds have also caused multiple large vehicle turnovers on highways and widespread power outages across Oklahoma.
Racing is set to resume as scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16. Saturday’s first post is at 6 p.m., while Sunday’s races begin at 4 p.m. All times are Central.
