One Sweet Boss was determined in the final yards and held on to win the $40,000 Opelousas (RG3) on Saturday night. The race for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds and upward was contested over a fast track at the 400-yard distance.
The entire field of five broke in perfect order, with Pk Pure Rogue and One Sweet Boss just a bit quicker than the rest. As the field moved past the midway point One Sweet Boss and jockey Leonardo Rodriguez grabbed a narrow advantage over Pk Pure Rogue, while Five Bar Jess Cartel was trying to put a bid between those two rivals. One Sweet Boss was able to fend off the late charging Five Bar Jess Cartel and hold on by a nose at the wire. Pk Pure Rogue was a full length back in third.
One Sweet Boss completed the distance in a time of 20.227 seconds. He earned a speed index of 84.
Owned by Flying K Ranch LLC (Darel and Susan Kallenbach) and trained by Phillip Calais, Jr., One Sweet Boss is a winner for the ninth time in 38 career starts. He earned $24,000 in the triumph and his career earnings now stand at $245,705.
The 7-year-old sorrel gelding was bred by the Flying K Ranch LLC. He was sired by One Sweet Jess and is out of the Rakin in the Cash mare Starlight Bess.
One Sweet Boss returned $13.20 to win in the minor upset, $5.80 to place and $2.20 to show. Five Bar Jess Cartel paid $3.20 and $2.10, with favored Pk Pure Rogue paying $2.10.
Live racing resumes on Wednesday with a 5:35pm first post. The Evangeline Downs Quarter Horse season runs through December 20.
