Aram Martinez had never secured a win at Remington Park before last week, but that didn’t stop him from making a statement—clinching three victories in a single night. Meanwhile, trainer Trey Wood showcased his expertise by conditioning the winner of the $419,735 Oklahoma Futurity-G2.
Their impressive performances earned them the Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week honors.
Just one day after his 18th birthday on Sunday, March 23, Martinez celebrated in style by winning for three different trainers—Raymond Gonzalez, Marla Vargas, and Cosme Velasquez. His victories included Godz Speed for Gonzalez in the second race, Jess Hips for Vargas in the fifth, and The Durango Lights for Velasquez in the seventh.
Martinez follows in the footsteps of his father, former Remington Park Quarter Horse rider L. Salvador Martinez, who finished 14th in last year’s standings with 10 wins but has yet to ride this meet. Aram notched his first career win at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Oklahoma, on October 20, 2024. In his young career, he has now recorded 16 mounts with four wins, two seconds, and two thirds, earning a total of $62,604. His father, Sal, boasts an impressive 6,035 starts, 773 wins, and career earnings of $18,706,565 in American Quarter Horse racing.
On the training side, multiple Grade 1-winning trainer Trey Wood prepared Flying Joy 1 for a standout performance in Saturday’s Oklahoma Futurity. The 2-year-old Flying Cowboy 123 filly, ridden by jockey Ricky Ramirez, soared to victory despite going off at 6-1 odds. She was the fastest qualifier on the second night of trials and proved it was no fluke in the finals.
“All the credit for (Flying Joy 1) goes to my dad and my assistants,” Wood said after the race. “Dad (Blane Wood) picked her out at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale and broke her.”
Owner David R. Rogers of Graham, Texas, trusted Blane Wood’s expertise and purchased Flying Joy 1 for $49,000. The filly more than rewarded that investment, earning $173,786 with her victory in the 84th edition of the Oklahoma Futurity, the oldest futurity in Quarter Horse racing (first held in 1947).
Trey Wood now holds 13 Grade 1 victories in his career, including a previous Remington Park highlight in 2012 with BP Cartels Alibi in the Heritage Place Futurity. He has also trained some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Apocalyptical Jess and Whistle Stop Cafe, both All American Futurity Champions. Under his guidance, Apocalyptical Jess went on to win the Ruidoso Quarter Horse Derby-G1, while Whistle Stop Cafe claimed the All American Oaks-G1 (via disqualification).
Live racing resumes Thursday-Sunday, March 27-30, with post times at 6 PM (CT) on weeknights and 4 PM on Sundays.
Since opening its casino in 2005, Remington Park has contributed over $376 million to Oklahoma’s general education fund.
