Third when facing a strong group of aged mares in the Virginia Hyland Handicap on April 12, Reliance Ranches’ Hott Temptation returned to face a strong group of sophomore fillies in the $22,500 La Pacifica Handicap on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.
The result was a convincing victory by the Texas-bred daughter of Tempting Dash, as she flew from the outside post and then cruising home from there to score a ¾ length victory as the 3/5 favorite in the La Pacifica. The field of six included four fillies which had raced in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Oaks on March 22. The lineup included second place finisher Powerful Wise Lady and third place finisher Beach Walk, but it was Hott Temptation, a troubled sixth in the Oaks final, who came through with the La Pacifica victory with jockey Eduardo Nicasio aboard for trainer Eddie Willis.
Hott Temptation was fourth during the early going of the 350-yard race, as she chased Powerful Wise Lady during the early part of the race. By the midway point, Hott Temptation was rolling, as she took the lead from the outside post six and never looked back from there. Bred by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches, Hott Temptation’s winning time of :17.581 gave her a fourth career victory from 12 starts with her winning earnings of $12,375 taking her career tally to $128,937.
“She got a really clean break today,” said Albert Valles, assistant trainer of Eddie Willis. “When she gets a clean break like that, she’s really, really fast. I’m glad all went well today.”
In the Oaks, Hott Temptation broke through the gate, and then once the race started she bumped while starting in fourth place. The early troubles were too much to overcome, as she ended up sixth behind the Willis-trainee, Shaken Goin On in the 400-yard Oaks. Hott Temptation’s next outing came in the Virginia Hyland at 350 yards. The $190,000 yearling purchase at the 2023 Ruidoso Yearling Sale ran solid from start to finish on that night, finishing behind the Brazilian star Miss Isao Jqm and 2023 La Pacifica Handicap winner One Sweet Duck. While she did not win the Virginia Hyland, Hott Temptation showed that her troubles in the Oaks were a thing of the past, setting her up perfectly for successful experience in the La Pacifica.
Gentry Farms’ Beach Walk finished second to earn $5,062 in the La Pacifica. Martin Arriaga piloted the Freighttrain B filly for trainer Juan Aleman. Parsons Ranch’s Powerful Wise Lady was moved up to third place following a disqualification by the racing stewards of Call Her Perfect after she lugged out during the race. Powerful Wise Lady earned $2,812 for her third-place finish. Really Classic was placed fourth with Ed Allred’s Call Her Perfect being moved down from third to fifth place. Fyrestorm completed the field.
