Party Tyme Racing’s Gold Gun Z ($3.80) set the fastest qualifying time for this year’s $154,230 Delta Downs Derby (Louisiana-bred, RG3) on Thursday night. Under jockey Noe Castaneda, Gold Gun Z won the first of three 400-yard trials in a time of 19.996 seconds while earning a speed index of 92.
Gold Gun Z, who is trained by Jose Espinosa, won last year’s $292,000 Laddie Futurity at Delta Downs before finishing a close fourth in the Louisiana Million at Evangeline Downs to wrap up his 2-year-old campaign. He came into Thursday’s trials off a runner-up effort in the $110,000 Mardi Gras Derby at Louisiana Downs.
Each Delta Downs Derby trial carried a purse of $10,000 and the winners each took home $6,000. With that paycheck, Gold Gun Z has now earned a total of $237,497.
Bred in Louisiana by Slash Z Quarter Horses, Gold Gun Z is a 2-year-old bay gelding by Gold Heart Eagle V, out of the Tres Seis mare Cf Smokin Gun. He was purchased for $122,000 at the 2023 Louisiana Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale.
