Discovery of Olodaterol in Hair Testing Reinforces Importance of Pre-Entry Requirement

July 14, 2025 – Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA) has confirmed the detection of Olodaterol through pre-entry hair testing protocols required for participation at Oklahoma racetracks. Olodaterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist, a class of bronchodilators that includes strictly prohibited substances such as clenbuterol, albuterol, and carmoterol.

Olodaterol is not an approved substance in racehorses, and its presence constitutes a violation of integrity standards. The positive findings were made as a condition of entry through OQHRA-managed hair testing, not by the regulatory body, and as such, horses testing positive were ruled ineligible for entry.

While reports of Olodaterol have surfaced in other states through hair samples, OQHRA is not currently aware of any confirmed positives in blood or urine samples. This reinforces the value of hair testing in identifying substances that may otherwise go undetected.

“This is a clear example of why hair testing matters,” said Krissy Bamberg, Executive Director of OQHRA. “Whether used pre-entry to prevent horses from competing, or post-race for official adjudication, hair testing provides a longer detection window and a clearer picture of the medications and substances a horse has been exposed to.”

OQHRA will continue to support and expand the use of hair testing as part of its integrity and welfare program. In addition, the association will continue to advocate for the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission to adopt hair testing as a standard matrix within the state’s official biological testing program. This includes both post-race testing and out-of-competition testing.

“We strongly encourage the Commission to expand its use of hair testing,” said Bamberg. “It’s a reliable, science-based tool that gives regulators the ability to detect long-term exposure to prohibited substances and strengthens our ability to ensure fairness and safety in the sport.”

OQHRA and our partner racetracks remain committed to identifying and deterring the use of new and emerging substances and protecting the integrity of racing in Oklahoma.

11 A Sweet Arthur-finish

OKLAHOMA CITY – Heavy rain and a 21mph tailwind hit Remington Park as the field loaded the gate for the Grade 2, $57,760 SLM Big Daddy Stakes on Friday night. A Sweet Arthur had a clean start and rallied to gain victory in the 550-yard race by a half-length.

Lightnin Strikes, the wagering favorite at 7-5 odds, did not have a clean break, flipping over and sitting down as the starting gates opened and the field of eight was dispatched. Since he caused his own problem, Lightnin Strikes was an official starter. With the favorite out of the race, the remaining seven battled for the prize.

A Sweet Arthur, owned by Samuel and Elizabeth Mendoza and trained by Samuel, broke well from his rail post-position as the one-horse. Under Juan Pulido, he built his energy up in the initial yards and found his top speed about halfway through the race. At that point, A Sweet Arthur burst to the front and put away those who found the lead early in Richrollnwagon, One Fabulous Boy and Ninja Cowboy.

A Sweet Arthur went off a longshot at 9-1 odds, finding the finish in :26.358 over the fast, but getting wet quickly, track for a speed index of 111. Ninja Cowboy (3-1 odds) fought for second with Richrollnwagon (15-1) holding on for third, another head behind the runner-up.

A 4-year-old gelding by A Sweet Jess from the First Down Dash broodmare Alltherightcurves, A Sweet Arthur was bred in Oklahoma by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses. The SLM Big Daddy score is the fourth career win from 12 attempts, to go along with two second and two third. The winner’s share of $33,900 boosted A Sweet Arthur to $79,055 in lifetime earnings.

The win on A Sweet Arthur was the third of the night for Pulido, the leading rider at this season at Remington Park with 42 wins.

This was the first victory in the SLM Big Daddy Stakes for all the connections of A Sweet Arthur. The race is named in honor of the two-time American Quarter Horse Association World Champion from the late 1990s. SLM Big Daddy was one of the most popular horses to ever compete at Remington Park, retiring with over a million dollars in career earnings.

The remaining order of finish in the SLM Big Daddy Stakes included One Fabulous Boy (4-1) fourth, Presido Pete (21-1) fifth, Nine One Won (11-1) sixth and Relentless Purrsuit (7-1) seventh. Lightnin Strikes did not finish.
