Delta Downs hosted six qualifying trials for this year’s $263,305 Firecracker Futurity (G2) on Friday night. It was Chance Kiehne’s Davsam who recorded the fastest time as he won the third heat in a time of 17.710 (92 speed index) with jockey Juan Garcia, Jr. in the saddle.
The win by Davsam ($3.60), who is trained by Viviane Hill, marked the first of his career. He previously finished second in his debut while qualifying for the Old South Futurity on opening weekend before winding up a troubled third in the final. He earned $3,000 for his victory on Friday and now has a bankroll of $23,402.
Bred in Oklahoma by Paul Tonderum, Davsam is a 2-year-old bay colt by Apollitical Jess, out of the Corona Cartel mare Little Kool Corona. He was purchased for $45,000 at the Heritage Place September Yearling sale in 2024.
Each Firecracker trial was contested over a muddy/sealed racetrack.
