Miss KT Perry was one of the favorites in Thursday night’s featured allowance at Remington Park; Brisa de Mar was a longshot. When the race was over the odds didn’t matter as they dead-heated for the win in a 350-yard race for non-winners of three career races.
Miss KT Perry, at 2-1 odds, was the second favorite in the wagering and Brisa de Mar was virtually dismissed as a 17-1 longshot. But jockeys Cristian Esqueda and Jimmy Brooks got their mounts to the wire at the exact same time, respectively, and stopped the timer in :17.515 seconds, both earning a speed-index of 93 over the fast track. The mutual victory gave both jockeys riding doubles on the night. They joined Mario Delgado and Jorge Torres, who also had two wins each on the evening.
Miss KT Perry, broke her habit of running second, winning for the third time in her career after seven runner-up finishes. Two of those second-place efforts came in big races in Iowa last fall. She finished heartbroken in second in the Grade 3 Keokuk Stakes, Grade 3 Distaff Challenge and the Grade 3 Two Rivers Stakes, all at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. One of those runner-up finishes by a nose came against one of the toughest mares to ever race at Remington Park and Prairie Meadows – Lynnder 16. That 9-year-old mare has won 23-of-44 times, is a multiple graded stakes winner and has nearly become a millionaire, banking $920,486.
Esqueda rode Miss KT Perry, a 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare by PYC Paint Your Wagon, out of the Mr Jess Perry mare KT Perry, to victory for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill and owner Leann Burns of Edmond, Okla. She was bred by her trainer and her late husband Randy Hill. Stacy Charette-Hill had two winners on the night.
Brisa de Mar is a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by Apollitical Jess, out of the Corona Cartel mare Aqua Girl, ridden by Brooks, trained by Eddie Lee “Bubba” Willis and owned by Wishbone Partnership (Michael Vaughan) of Norman, Okla. She was bred by her owner.
The Brisa de Mar and Miss KT Perry finished only a head in front of third-place runner and post-time 3-2 wagering favorite Dancing Cowgirl 5678. They each earned $12,750 for the win, splitting first and second-place money from the $31,480 purse.
Miss KT Perry improved her record to 23 starts, three wins, seven seconds and four thirds with earnings of $121,289. Brisa de Mar has now won 3-of-12 starts with three thirds for a bankroll of $49,874.
Miss Kt Perry paid $4 to win, $4.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Brisa de Mar returned $14.60 to win, $20.40 to place and $7.40 to show.
Remington Park racing continues Friday through Sunday, May 23-25. The first race Friday and Saturday is at 4pm. Sunday racing begins at 4pm. All times are Central.
