The final of the GP Taça de Ouro was the biggest attraction of the weekend for Quarter Horse racing on the South American continent. Winners of their respective trials, five horses competed over the distance of 350 yards at the Sorocaba Racetrack in São Paulo.

Ridden by jockey Vicente Barros, Apollitical Glory had an excellent break, drifting slightly to her left but quickly aligned in her racing lane. She did not take the lead immediately; the one who assumed the early advantage was her paternal sister, Condessa Flying MV, who managed to run in front for one third of the race.

From the 220-yard mark on, Apollitical Glory took over the lead and began to control the race. Condessa Flying MV could not keep up and was also passed by Polo Fantastic and Messi Fantastic STM, both engaging in a duel for second place. Staying in front, the 3-year-old filly crossed the finish line and became the champion of the GP Taça de Ouro, stopping the clock at 17.700 seconds.

It was the ninth stakes victory and the 23rd overall win of the season for Haras Prata’s breeding program, the statistical leader in the category and also the owner of Apollitical Glory. “Since she was born we had kept her as a genetic reserve, due to the quality of her pedigree,” said Eriquinho. “Expectations had always been very high. In her first training session she already stood out above the others, but a clinical episode a bit more serious took her off the track for quite some time,” he revealed. “Winning this important race with this filly was incredible and will never be forgotten by all of us at Haras Prata,” concluded the heir of the Braga family.

Jockey Vicente Barros, who rode the winner, became a three-time champion of the GP Taça de Ouro, having won the race previously with Edo JQM (2024) and Imperador Eagle MRL (in 2022). He earned his 17th win of the season at the Sorocaba Racetrack, once again forming a successful partnership with trainer Flavio Melo, who has already saddled 19 winners in the same period, earning purses exceeding R$ 700,000 (US$ 123,000) so far in 2025.

The sire of the GP Taça de Ouro winner, Flying Cowboy 123, is in his first crop in Brazil and, just as it was when his offspring debuted on the tracks of the United States, he is recording absolute success at the most important Quarter Horse racetrack in South America. In São Paulo, only seven of his offspring have raced, with five becoming winners, and two of them earning stakes victories. They totaled 11 wins and purse earnings of R$ 166,250 (US$ 29,200).

Apollitical Glory’s dam is Personal Glory (by Walk Thru Fire). She was exported to Brazil in 2017, having previously produced on North American soil. As a racehorse, she won three races at Los Alamitos between 2010 and 2011, earning $172,554.

The runner-up of the GP Taça de Ouro was the colt Polo Fantastic, saddled by trainer Alan Mendes, who is in great form this year. Messi Fantastic STM finished third, representing the Paraguayan ownership of Stud JTM. Condessa Flying MV finished fourth; Fast Good Candy, the most experienced in the field at 5 years old, finished fifth.

OKLAHOMA CITY – It was a bit of a David vs. Goliath story retold in the $100,000 Dee Raper Sooner State Stakes on Saturday night as Toastin Heros pulled out his slingshot and slayed the giant Empressum.

The race was at 400 yards for Oklahoma-breds, 3-years-old and older.

Empressum was a past winner of arguably the toughest race for older horses in the country – the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos – and was also named the 2022 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse by the American Quarter Horse Association when he won four of six starts as a 4-year-old and earned $587,896.

Empressum was also a perfect four-for-four in his Remington Park career but had not competed in Oklahoma City since winning the 2021 Remington Park Derby.

Toastin Heros was a winner of two of his last three stakes starts, albeit in smaller purse black-type races at smaller tracks. That didn’t matter to this 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding nor to his backers as there wasn’t that much difference in the odds of the top two horses. Toastin Heros was sent off as the 2-1 second favorite in the race to Empressum at 3-2 odds.

The two stakes winners fought gamely to the wire in the Sooner State and it was Toastin Heros, trained by Clint Crawford, who came out on top by three-quarters of a length after the 400 yards. Jockey Jacob Enriquez kept Toastin Heros out of trouble from the outside post-position 10 and the winner cruised to the somewhat easy victory. Empressum was another head better than third-place finisher Hooked N Gone (6-1).

“He took a little stutter step at the start and it took my breath away,” Crawford said.

Normally, a tiny bit of trouble like that would spell defeat against a horse like Empressum, but that wasn’t the case for Toastin Heros.

“You don’t want to make a mistake against these,” Crawford said. “But he has such a motor on him and he had free sailing from the outside and came through. He is a lot better as a 4-year-old than he was at 3.”

Owner-breeder Gene Cox was thrilled to see this horse continue the family success that he has seen through the years.

“I had his mama (Toastin With Coronas) and his grandmama, so this is amazing,” Cox said. Cox makes his home in Chester, S.C.

The difference between the two horses’ bankrolls was Empressum’s $2,537,748 going into the race to Toastin Heros’ $344,647.

This was the first win in this stakes series for all connections.

Toastin Heros paid $6.60 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show. He covered the distance of 400 yards in :19.446 on a fast track for a 99 speed index. The rest of the order of finish past the top three was B AJ (17-1) fourth, Js On Fire (7-1) fifth, Mystic Paint (32-1) sixth, Jessies First Card (13-1) seventh, Apolitical Time (41-1) eighth and Holms (8-1) ninth. Defours was an early scratch from the race.

Toastin Heros, a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Valiant Hero, out of the Coronas Leaving You mare Toastin With Coronas, earned $57,600 for his trip to the winner’s circle and now has won three off his last four stakes races. He had won the $191,000 La Fiesta Derby at the Downs at Albuquerque as a 3-year-old last year on Oct. 19 and also the Grade 1, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 7 this year, starting for the first time as a 4-year-old. He was bred by his owner.

The Sooner State Stakes honors influential Oklahoma horseman Dee Raper. He played a key role in helping Oklahoma pass pari-mutuel racing legislation in the early 1980s. Raper also served 14 years as president of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, all while operating Belle Mere Farms with his wife Betty. Belle Mere stood such top stallions Bully Bullion and Mr Eye Opener, while campaigning the likes of Eye Yin You to multiple stakes triumphs. Dee Raper was inducted into the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame at Remington Park in 2012.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday, April 19 with a first post time of 4pm-Central.

OKLAHOMA CITY – One horse was flying on the outside from post-position 10 and another was cruising on the rail from the post-position one. When the photo finish came down, it was Uncle Redheads on the far outside who was the winner in the $75,000 Mr Master Bug Stakes on Saturday night at Remington Park.

The Mr Master Bug Stakes is for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds at 350 yards.

Uncle Redheads had won the heated battle over the inside horse, Famous N Relentless, by a head. Jockey Armando Alvidrez had just enough drive left in Uncle Redheads to get home first as the 2-1 toteboard favorite. Famous N Relentless (6-1) recorded the same 91 speed index as the winner, but couldn’t quite match that final stride. The runner-up finished three-quarters of a length in front of third-place finisher Apolitical Valor (8-1).

Uncle Redheads, a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding by Uncle D, out of the One Sweet Jess mare Redheads Run Hotter, paid $6 to win, $3.60 to place and $3 to show.

It was the first win in this series for Alvidrez, trainer Jason Olmstead and owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses of Fran Cavenaugh, based in Wayne, Okla. Another Cavenaugh did win this race in 2018 when AQHA Hall of Fame jockey G.R. Carter booted home Weetonas Lafawn for Donald Cavenaugh, Fran’s husband and trainer Clint Crawford.

Uncle Redheads covered the 350 yards in :17.535 over the fast track compared to Famous N Relentless’ time of :17.546. Olmstead also trains Famous N Relentless.

The rest of the order of finish was BP Hail Mary (11-1) fourth, Margarets Cowboy (39-1) fifth, Ding Dang Dulce (26-1) sixth, T Bar Fabulous Eagle (8-1) seventh, Cowboy 1 (6-1) eighth, KVN Design (17-1) ninth and Jess a Good Angel (3-1) 10th.

Uncle Redheads earned $42,750 for Cavenaugh and improved his lifetime record to 11-6-2-1 for $234,422 in career earnings. It was the third time in four tries that he has won at this distance. He was bred by Charles and Elizabeth Horton.

The Mr Master Bug is named after the 1982 All American Futurity winner who was bred and owned by Marvin and Lela Barnes of Ada, Okla. Mr Master Bug earned American Quarter Horse Champion honors in three consecutive years from 1982-1984 and retired with more than $1.7 million in earnings.

OKLAHOMA CITY – For the third consecutive year, trainer Jason Olmstead had his picture taken with the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile winner, this time with 13-1 longshot Apollitikal Dreamer on Saturday night.

It’s become quite the habit for jockey Ramiro Garcia as well. This was the second year in a row to the winner’s circle for him in this race. He and Olmstead teamed up last year with Juvenile Stakes winner Famous N Relentless, who ran second in the Mr Master Bug Stakes on Saturday. Go back to 2024 and you will find Olmstead in that winner’s circle photo with Relentless American with jockey Edwin Escobedo up.

Apollitikal Dreamer paid a whopping $28.20 to win on a $2 win ticket, $11.40 to place and $6.60 to show. The 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Apollitical Jess, from the Hes Relentless mare One Kool Dreamer, became the second maiden on Saturday to win for the first time in their careers, and against stakes company. He had run second in his Remington Park Futurity trial, beaten soundly by PYC Dollars Cowboy, one of the top four fastest qualifiers for that nearly $1 million final.

Apollitikal Dreamer outfinished runner-up D Amor (7-2) by three-quarters of a length for that first victory, and was another neck in front of third-place finisher Be Iconic (5-2 favorite). The winner stopped the timer for 330 yards in :16.774 over the fast track, good for an 88 speed index. The rest of the order of finish was JC Perseus (22-1) fourth, Small Town Hero (16-1) fifth, Cartel Lady 123 (3-1) sixth, Scif (3-1) seventh, Gold Medalist (25-1) eighth and Lovelee (23-1) ninth. Rockn My Socks was an early scratch from this race.

Apollitikal Dreamer was bred by owner Brenda Reiswig of Bismarck, N.D. He earned $40,816 from the purse for Reiswig and now stands at two starts, one win, one second for $44,216.
