Sisters Elena Andrade and Angela Aquino embrace their racing roots as Southern California-based trainers.
For sisters Elena Andrade and Angela Aquino, horse racing isn’t just a spectator sport, it’s a birthright. Carrying the torch of a four-generation racing legacy ignited by their late father and former jockey Carlos Aquino, who died in 2020 at age 64, and mother, Betsy Moro, a retired trainer, Andrade and Aquino are both charting their own paths as successful racehorse trainers.
Based at Los Alamitos in Southern California, both Andrade and Aquino credit their upbringing to shaping their life’s work as trainers. The racetrack is not just a place for competition for Andrade and Aquino; It is home.
“We grew up on the racetrack. Our mom trained and our dad rode,” shared Andrade. “We didn’t know any different. We lived around the barn while my mom worked. It has always been our lifestyle. We were either at the barn or at the races all the time.
“My sister was born in Santa Rosa, and I was born in Portland because that was where they were on the fair racing circuit when my mom and dad were traveling,” she added. “We were born in different racetrack cities because of the way the racing schedule turned out for them. My mom and dad trained and rode on the fair circuit until it was time for us to get enrolled in school, and then they settled at Galway Downs Training Center (near Temecula, Calif.). But still, even then, much of our life was still at the barn on weekends and when we weren’t in school.”
Aquino echoes Andrade’s perspective, citing the all-encompassing nature of life centered around horses.
“When you grow up in the racing business, it becomes a way of life,” Aquino said. “The horses come first and everything else comes second. That’s just how it is. Me and my sister have always been best friends. We had a few friends growing up, but we were best friends because horses always came first in our lives and everything else got pushed. You get accustomed to the lifestyle. The horses are what we’ve always known, and we both love it.”
Despite their upbringing around racehorses, Andrade and Aquino have carved out slightly different niches within the equine industry. While their daily lives remain…
