At this time of the year the racing activities at Ruidoso Downs become a major focal point for Quarter Horse racing because of the All American Triple Crown. These races, starting in 1964, include the Kansas Futurity which switched to the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 in 1993, the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and the All American Futurity-G1. Owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders and fans look forward to the summer on the Mountain chasing the very illusive All American Triple Crown.
But the summer of 2024 at Ruidoso Downs has brought a different focus because of the South Fork and Salt Fires, which resulted in the devastation and destruction of land and property in and around the community of Ruidoso. Then came the rain, which caused flash floods from the burn scars causing a lack of flood control. The flash flooding made a direct impact on Ruidoso Downs Race Track causing considerable damage to the track that put the racing season in jeopardy not just once but three times.
It was under the direction of Ruidoso General Manager Rick Baugh, his staff and support personnel that the 2024 racing season was initially saved. Through their fantastic work and dedication they brought the track back to life in a matter of days after each flooding event – a job that should have taken weeks to complete. But on July 20, Mother Nature returned to the famous track as the rains came again and this time the flooding has wreaked havoc on the track causing extensive damage that will prevent further racing on the Mountain for 2024.
But the good news is that two legs of the All American Triple Crown are in the books, and it has been announced that the running of the coveted All American Futurity-G1 will move to the Downs at Albuquerque and run as originally scheduled.
