Feeding People
Riley and Michelle Blanchet nourish both bodies and spirits for those they meet in life
If you’ve been to a Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association sale in the past 25 years, you’ve surely heard about Riley and Michelle Gisclar Blanchet. It’s likely that you’ve met them as well: That’s how long they’ve been feeding free meals to attendees there.
“I started out cooking for my brother [Chris Blanchet and his wife, Kim, of Blanchet Farms in Ville Platte, Louisiana] and then what was left, we’d feed to other farms,” Riley says. “People would feel guilty about sending their people to eat and I’d say, ‘When it runs out, it runs out.’

Over three days, they feed six meals and have developed a full menu with a daily entree that might consist of pork chop sandwiches, shrimp étouffée, barbecue, jambalaya, hamburgers, or hot link sandwiches. “I have a good group of people who help me and work for cold beer, and we cut up and visit with the people who come,” Riley says.
Now, not surprisingly, when Riley and Michelle go to Ruidoso in the summer, they’re met by the chant, “The Cajuns are coming!”
The joy and enthusiasm that the couple find in feeding others carries over into every aspect of their lives, from their previous and present careers, to their families, friends, extended equine spheres of influence and most especially, to RJ Ranch, their Grosse Tete, Louisiana breeding operation—not to mention Riley’s position as mayor of Rosedale, Louisiana.
“I call Michelle ‘Mamachelle,’” says Matt Martin, a rancher and horse trainer from Sunset, Louisiana, whose wife, Alli, hauls with Michelle to compete at various rodeos. “I think she and Mr. Riley are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. When they do something for you, it’s because they want to and not because they want anything. They have a genuine kindness to them. I’ve met very few people like them, and I think…
