The Muleshoe Ranch/Hatchet Ranch team out of Arizona achieved a historic victory in November, capturing the 2024 Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas. Led by Logan Anderson of Muleshoe Ranch and sponsored by Speedhorse, the team, which hails from Kirkland and Paradise, Arizona, respectively, emerged victorious from a deep and competitive field of 25 teams across the West in the 20th annual edition of the prestigious event.
After finishing a respectable fifth in the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, the Muleshoe Ranch/Hatchet Ranch team hit paydirt in November. The team, which has worked together for three years, consists of Logan Anderson, Logan Westcott, Ace Peterson, his son, Whip, and daughter, Dally, and Cole Hubbell.
“To win it all is quite a deal,” said Logan Anderson. “It’s a tough competition. There are a lot of good teams from around the U.S. It is especially nice to bring (the title) back to Arizona because that’s never been done.
“The teammates I have are great and we’ve all been friends for a long time. In 2022, Logan (Westcott) was awarded Top Hand that year, and the horse I rode that year was awarded Reserve Top Horse. This year, we won the World, and Logan ended up being Top Hand again this year. It’s pretty cool.”
In highlighting some of the unique strengths of the team, Anderson said, “Ace is, I don’t want to say the old man on the team because he’s not an old man, but he is the older man, and he’s wise.
“Ace is a thinker, and he is the captain. He won’t say he is the captain. He says I am, but Ace is the captain. He is the leader of the bunch. Everybody on the team can rope, but Logan is really good, and he can ride a bronc exceptionally well. If they had just a bronc riding competition in the U.S., he would be in the top two if not at the very top.”
The WRCA rodeo highlights five fundamental events that demonstrate the skills crucial for ranch life. These events mirror the everyday challenges and activities faced by working cowboys. At the World Championship, the Muleshoe/Hatchet Ranch team placed first in Stray Gathering. The five events are:
Ranch Bronc Riding: This event showcases a cowboy’s ability to stay mounted on an unpredictable, bucking horse. It’s a demanding test of both physical endurance and horsemanship skills, reflecting the challenges of handling and controlling livestock on a working ranch.
Stray Gathering: This event simulates the crucial teamwork required on ranches to round up cattle that have wandered from the herd. Cowboys collaborate to rope and bring these strays back, demonstrating the…
