The Fulton Quien Sabe Ranch of Channing, Texas got its start in the 1950’s when it was purchased by R. H. Fulton and his son Joe Kirk Fulton. It was a cattle ranch. Under the direction of Joe Kirk Fulton, the ranch became a beacon of success in the Quarter Horse industry. The ranch was first developed as a performance horse breeding and showing program that showed and stood a stallion named Aledo Bar, the 1959 AQHA High Point Halter Stallion. Aledo Bar was sired by Steel Bars, a son of Three Bars. His dam was Willful Miss, a daughter of King P-234. He became the sire of outstanding foals, including three AQHA High Point Halter Horses in Aledo Bar’s Lady, Aledolita Bar and Lady Gaines, as well as 17 AQHA Champions and 25 Superior halter and performance horses. Aledo Bar’s Lady was Joe Kirk’s personal mount.

The move to racing was reported by Lyn Jank in “Joe Kirk Fulton and His Dream” in the March 15, 1985, issue of SPEEDHORSE. The move was because of the ability of the racehorse side of the industry to make more money and a newfound love of racing. Today Joe Kirk Fulton is an All-Time Leading Breeder of racehorses with earnings of $18,882,442. When we look at the contribution of Joe Kirk Fulton to the American Quarter Horse, we will see how conformation and his belief in mare power played a role in his breeding philosophy.
As a youth Joe Kirk was given the responsibility of taking care of Susie F, a mare bred by Warren Shoemaker. She was sired by Gold Mount and out of Slippers by Nick. She served as the foundation mare for the Joe Kirk Fulton Quarter Horses. His father transferred the ownership of this mare to Joe Kirk on his 16th birthday. Upon graduation from high school Joe Kirk went to Texas Tech University to study animal science. While at TECH he was approached about coming up with a mascot for the football program and the Red Raider or the Masked Rider as it is called today was born. Joe Kirk served as the Red Raider for three years until his graduation. There is a statue of Joe Kirk and “Blackie” on the campus commemorating the tradition of the…
