Gary Anderson inherited his father’s ability to merge form and function in a fast horse
Utah breeder Gary Anderson is a prime example of how working together magnifies partners’ best traits. By sharing ideas and goals, Gary, 70, of Bluffdale, and his father, Max, 91, of South Jordan, built Speed, LLC into the birthplace of sought-after rope, barrel and race horses, many produced by their great Dam of Distinction, Jess Sass Me.
Throughout Gary’s life, he and his dad have teamed together in ranching, team roping, building and breeding. They and their spouses—Gary’s late mother, Maurine, and his wife, Sandra—have fostered a legacy of faith, growth, hard work and cowboy grit in their children, grandchildren and, in Max and Maurine’s case, great-grandchildren as well.
“Gary and Max raise amazing horses and are constantly evaluating them; they know how to raise a really good horse,” says Butch Wise.
“Gary has a real love for the horse business, and a desire to learn and succeed. And he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet,” Butch adds. “He’s very gracious and generous and never passes up an opportunity to tell people how much he appreciates them. Lowell Neumayer, when he was running the Ruidoso Sale, said that every year, he’d get a call from Max and Gary thanking him for what Ruidoso does for them and their sale horses. Not everybody takes the opportunity to do that, and it was much appreciated.”
“Gary is humble, hardworking, responsible, a listener and a doer,” proclaims Max. “Our response to any problem has always been, ‘Gary will do it.’ Whenever something needed to be done, no matter how difficult or small the task, we knew that he’d take care of it 100%.”

The family work ethic spread to the next generations as well: Gary and Sandra’s four daughters learned early that there wasn’t a chore or type of work that a girl couldn’t do, and according to daughter Angela, they all loved working alongside their dad.
Over decades in the horse industry, first breeding rope and barrel horses and then branching out into racehorses, Max and Gary have been known for their ability to select good-looking horses with great physical assets and temperaments for the task they were bred for. Indeed, their breeding program began by first noticing how genetics and speed contributed to…
