Oh! What a year it has been! Needless to say, the racing season at Ruidoso Downs overcame a great deal of turmoil to just complete Quarter Horse Racing’s Triple Crown of the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, Rainbow Futurity-G1 and All American Futurity-G1. Mother Nature played a major role at this idyllic mountain track causing the chaos that could have ended the 2024 racing season.
The racing season on the mountain started normally on May 24 with the trials of the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 with a little gelding named Hezgothelook Z winning his trial. Then, on June 9 he won the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 giving him the first leg of the race series. Then came the devastating fires followed by the horrendous flash floods. The effects of the flash floods specifically hit the Triple Crown Series in the trials of the Rainbow Futurity-G1, where the last two races were canceled on the second day of the trials on June 29. Undaunted, Hezgothelook Z won his trial on June 29 before the canceled races. He was the second fastest qualifier, coming back on July 14 to secure his second win in the series, the Rainbow Futurity-G1. Then the rain came again. This time the flooding caused extensive damage that ended the racing season at Ruidoso Downs. But the racing officials at The Downs At Albuquerque opened their doors so the All American Futurity-G1 and its trials were moved to be run as scheduled. The trials of the All American Futurity-G1 were on August 8 and 9. Hezgothelook Z won his trial setting the second fastest time of the two days of trials. When the gates opened for the finals Hezgothelook Z, although bumped shortly after the start, was off with the determination he was noted for in his brief racing career. Then the shadow ghosts down the track put him off stride, but again he pulled it together regaining his determination to win the All American Futurity-G1. Despite the hardships these two year olds have endured Hezgothelook Z has overcome it all, giving us the long-awaited winner of Quarter Horse Racing’s Triple Crown, fulfilling the ultimate All American Dream.
Hezgothelook Z was purchased by the Triple One Ranch, LLC, owned by Leo and Norma Olivarez, at the 2023 Heritage Place Yearling Sale for $70,000. He was purchased on the recommendation of…
