The horse that wins a World Championship must possess, not only the speed, but the will and desire that is needed to win the World Championship. We saw that when we covered Danjer after he was named the 2021 World Champion. But he wasn’t done as he started working towards another World Championship in 2022. His race record for that year consisted of seven starts with six of them in Grade One races with five wins and one second. He won four of his first five starts with an eighth in the Leo Stakes-G1, giving him his only unplaced finish in his first start of the year. He qualified for the Champion of Champions-G1, where he came in second, giving the winner Empressum the World Championship. Danjer immediately left California for Texas and the Championship at Sunland Park-G1, securing a win over KJ Desparado, Flash Bak and Instygator, all Grade One winners. His winning time was :20.620, which was a speed index of 120. He earned $765,183 in 2022, but no championships.
The big win in the Championship at Sunland Park-G1 indicated that Danjer was ready for another run for a World Championship. After a short rest, his 2023 racing season began at Remington Park with a win in the Leo Stakes-G1, revenge for his only unplaced finish in 2022. His next start was a win in the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, his third win in this prestigious race, a race he won on the third of June. This gave him the Remington Park Horse of the Meet title for the second time. But on June 18, 2023, the Quarter Horse racing world was sent into shock when it was announced that Danjer had died. His death was attributed to an aneurysm. But as you will see, he is not and will not be forgotten.
It seems that losing a horse early in the year after two starts would mark the end of that horse’s role in Quarter Horse racing, especially for year-end honors. But not Danjer. With just two starts and two wins, earning $230,364 despite a whole lot of racing through the year by many good runners, Danjer was named the 2023 World Champion, Champion Aged Horse and the Champion Aged Gelding.
A look at what Danjer ran against in his last three races shows his quality as a racehorse and the kind of competition he faced in his pursuit of excellence as a racehorse. The Championship at Sunland had KJ Desparado second and he was the winner in the 2023 Refrigerator Championship Stakes-G1 and the All American Gold Cup-G1. He is the AQHA All-Time Leading Money Eaner of over $3 million and an All American Futurity-G1 winner. Flash Bak was third and he was the winner of the 2023 Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship-G1 and he won the 2023 Champions of Champions-G1. Flash Bak was also in the beaten field behind Danjer in the 2023 Leo Stakes-G1 and the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational-G1. A Tres Of Eagle was also in the beaten field of the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational-G1, and he was third in the 2023 Champion of Champions-G1. Just A Kool Boy was in the beaten field in the 2023 Leo Stakes-G1. He was winner of the Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G2, and he is the 2023…
