Safe to say, Flying Cowboy 123, a two-time Champion son of renowned sire Apollitical Jess, is off to a flying start in his career as a stallion. An exceptional talent on the racetrack, Flying Cowboy 123 made an equally triumphant transition to stud duty. In 2023, Flying Cowboy 123 not only secured the title of Leading First-Crop Sire, but also surpassed the record for All-Time Leading First-Crop Sire with progeny earnings of $4,313,500, shattering the previous mark by more than $1.3 million.
From his initial crop of 50 winners (from 82 starters), Flying Cowboy 123 is already the sire of a Grade 1 winner and Champion. His top runner is Cowboys Gun Z. Winner of the All American Futurity-G1, Cowboys Gun Z won three of six starts and placed in two others for owner West Texas Racing Partners and trainer Michael Joiner. Bred in Oklahoma by Running C Ranch LLC, Cowboys Gun Z banked $1,548,344 as a juvenile and at season’s end, was named AQHA Racing Champion Two Year Old and Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding.
All told, Flying Cowboy 123 sired 13 stakes winners with 17 stakes wins, and eight graded stakes winners. Additional top runners include Flyin Rabbit 123 ($294,438), winner of the Southwest Juvenile Invitational Stakes-G2 and the Texas Classic Juvenile Stakes; Fire Cowboy ($225,733), first in the Evangeline Downs Futurity-G2 and the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship Stakes-G2; Cardiac Cowboy ($196,610), winner of the Valley Junction Futurity-G3; Jess Flying Cowgirl ($188,522), winner of the Sam Houston Futurity-G2; Flying Sophia ($185,522), winner of the La Fiesta Futurity-G3; and Double Down 123 ($180,408), winner of the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2.
Flying Cowboy 123’s R Cowgirl, an Appaloosa Oklahoma homebred for Jeff Adams, racked up a pair of Grade 1 wins for her sire in 2023, taking down top prize in the Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 and the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 on her way to seasonal earnings of $167,185. She was named the 2023 Appaloosa Horse of the Year, Supreme Champion Two Year Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.
In addition to the success his runners enjoyed on the racetrack, Flying Cowboy 123 has also proved his quality in the auction ring. He was the fifth-leading North American Quarter Horse Yearling Sales Sire by average in 2023.
