The rain finally let up in Ruidoso and the sun came out with a light breeze on Saturday afternoon. There was a full day of racing at Ruidoso Downs. There were three Quarter Horse races scheduled for the day. The grandstands started to fill up as more people arrived at the racetrack gearing up for the All American races on Sunday and Monday. You could hear banter all over the track about the upcoming All American races and who is going to be the next winner.

After the ninth race, people started heading east toward the Ruidoso Downs Sales Pavilion to continue the day’s events with the second night of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, which started around 5:30. There was a large turnout of people for the sale Saturday evening.

Kent Hamit of New Castle, Oklahoma, has been working the sales since 2000 for Lazy E Ranch. He has been a Barrel Horse trainer since 2006 and owns Kent Hamit Roofing Inc., which he started in 1992.  He began working the sales in 1986 for Belle Mere Farms and has also worked for Marty Powers and Roger Daly.  Kent grooms, shoes and takes the yearlings to the ring.  He says, "I love doing it and that's why I keep coming back each year."

Bennie Greathouse, manager of the Hawn Holt Cross Triangle Ranch, has been bringing horses to sell for 15 years.  Bennie says it has been a good sale for the ranch.  "It's one of the best sales in the nation and a great weekend full of events.  We come on a Sunday and work until we leave on Labor Day.  We have repeat customers that want to come and see what Cross Triangle has brought each year. "

Cheryl Pevehouse was with her daughter, Shawn Ellis, Saturday evening.  Cheryl’s mother is Rozella Pevehouse of PV Quarter Horse Farms, owner of Jess Good Candy, the 2015 All American Futurity winner.  Cheryl said, "This is always an exciting weekend. We'd like to say good luck to the qualifiers and we wish for the horses and jockeys to have a safe race!"

Joseph Bennett from Weatherford, Texas, has been a full time employee at Lazy E since December 2015.  He has been in the Show Horse business for the past 20 years and traveled throughout the USA.  He grew tired of being on the road and has now settled in at Lazy E. This is Joseph's first time to experience Ruidoso, and he is looking forward to going to his first All American Futurity on Monday.

The Ruidoso Downs Race Track chaplaincy not only offers services in English and Spanish at the track chapel, but is also very active in assisting those who need both physical and spiritual guidance. The chaplaincy’s contributions include clothing, food and housing.

Make sure you watch the slide show of the day’s events to the end. This year Speedhorse presents the All American Countdown Trivia Contest.
